Senior leader helping turn season around for UW-W JEREMY PINK Staff writer


Senior Jacie Hein has been a leader for the women’s soccer team over the past couple seasons. The team has improved to 6-5 after a 1-4 start this season. It’s experienced players like senior Jacie Hein that help teams win games, and that’s just what the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s soccer team is currently doing. Last year’s team had many moments worth remembering, but none was greater than the performance of Hein. She ranked among the top 20 in the league in points, points per game and goals as a junior last year. Hein’s accomplishments were recognized at the end of the season when she received All-Conference first team honors.

The girls won twice this weekend bringing their overall record to 6-5. They are currently riding a four game winning streak. That winning streak has helped right what was a horrible 1-4 start. One of the many players pushing this team right now is Hein. Friday, the Warhawks take on conference rival UW-Eau Claire. That game starts at 3 p.m. at Fiskum Field. Hein, a senior from North Prairie, wasn’t able to play in their last game due to injury, but she did have plenty to say about her team’s performance thus far. “The wins we are finally starting to string together couldn't have come at a better time. I feel as though our team is finally comfortable in and confident with each other,” said Hein. She admitted that late goals and miscommunication hurt the team in the beginning of the season, but that they are committed to winning. Not only does she want to win, she knows that she and the other girls can win. “With the caliber of players we have on this team, I find it difficult not to have ridiculously high expectations,” said Hein. “One thing I've learned is that we need to take this one game at a time. Any of the upcoming teams can give us trouble if we look past them.” That is most definitely true as their next four games are against tough conference opponents. They do have two advantages however. They are playing the best soccer of the season right now and three of those four games are at home. The fact that they are at home for those games might be the biggest advantage because the Warhawks are undefeated at home this season.

With every game, however, Hein will have to deal with the fact that this is her final year at UW Whitewater. “I am a senior now, and the saying ‘play every game like it’s your last’ is actually starting to come true,” said Hein. “It has been an honor to play for the Whitewater women’s soccer team. My senior class and I have worked incredibly hard over the years and speaking on behalf of all of us, we aren't done yet.”
